Generally speaking, gerontology addresses the physical, mental, and sociological aspects of aging. Specifically, gerontologists and other health care professionals who provide direct patient care to the elderly strive to find ways to help improve care for an aging population–a population that due to better medical care and technology is living longer than ever before.

With a rapidly aging U.S. population, the demand for health care professionals with the advanced skills and education required to meet the needs of the elderly is one the rise. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, “In 2050, the population aged 65 and over is projected to be 83.7 million, almost double its estimated population of 43.1 million in 2012.”

Earning an undergraduate or graduate degree in gerontology, or a related field, will prepare students for an array of career opportunities in just about any health care field that involves the elderly. Some of the more popular environments were gerontologists are found working include nursing homes, retirement communities, long-term care facilities and assisted living centers. Some gerontologists also work with government agencies and hospitals.

Specific career positions within the field of gerontology include gerontological psychologist, mental health case worker, social worker, healthcare manager and social scientist, among many others. Earning a degree in gerontology will prepare students for careers in these fields and many more. Many health care professionals will earn a bachelor’s degree in a general health care field and then pursue a master’s or doctorate in gerontology. This is a common path for individuals that want to maximize their career opportunities.
