Galveston is a coastal city in Texas located on Galveston Island, a barrier island on the Gulf Coast, about 50 miles southeast of Houston. As of 2010, the city has a population of roughly 48,000. Much of the city’s economy is based on tourism, healthcare, shipping and financial industries. Another major eonomic force in the city is University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) with its 2,500 students. UTMB includes schools of nursing, medicine allied health professions, and a graduate school of biomedical sciences. Galveston is also home to several other institutions of higher learning including Texas A&M University-Galveston, an ocean-oriented branch campus, and Galveston College a junior college that was established in 1967.
