With a population just over 40,000, Florence is one Alabama’s mid-size cities and belongs to “The Shoals”, a metro area which includes the cities of Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield and Muscle Shoals. Florence is the largest of the cities in The Shoals metro area and is the main economic force in the north-west region of Alabama.
Florence has a rich history and strong culture. It is well known in Alabama for its tourist events which include the nationally renowned Renaisance Faire and W.C. Handy Music Festival–annual events sponsored by the city. Other attractions include the Rosenbaum House, designed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Established in 1830 as LaGrange College, the University of North Alabama is the only four-year university in the city and is the largest university in state. The institution is comprised of four academic colleges and schools that together offers over 60 majors and undergraduate degree programs. The university also offers graduate degrees in various fields of study, incluing business administration, elementary education, health, special education, English, and criminal justice. It is one of the few universities in the United States to offers a bachelor’s degree in commercial music.
Heritage Christian University is religious institution affiliated with the Churches of Christ. The school offers an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies. Minors in Biblical Languages, Biblical History, Family Life, New Testament, and Youth Ministries are also available.
