Ferris State University, locally referred to as "FSU" or just "Ferris", is a public sponsored university located in Big Rapids, Michigan. The university was first established as the Big Rapids Industrial School in 1884 by Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, Michigan's governor, who later went on to become a U.S. senator. Woodbridge Ferris, who the university was named after, died in 1928 while serving in the U.S. senate. FSU is recognized for being one of the first universities in the nation to accept women and is the only public university in the state of Michigan to be founded by just one person.

With over 14,500 students, FSU currently stands as the 9th largest university in Michigan. In addition to its main campus in Big Rapids, the university has 19 satellite campuses located throughout the state as well as an online campus where students can take courses and earn degrees via the Internet. The main goal of the education programs offered at FSU is to prepare students to succeed in their chosen career field. FSU offers 2- and 4-year degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level through its eight academic schools and colleges. Through its pharmacy and optometry colleges, FSU offers doctorate degrees and through the College of Arts and Sciences, Education, Business and Humanities it offers a multidisciplinary doctorate of education degree in community college leadership. The university currently has a student-to-faculty ration of 16:1 and is well known for having one of the highest graduate placement rates of any university in the nation. All courses at FSU are taught by actual professors, not graduate students.

Academics

Through its eight academic colleges, FSU offers more than 170 programs in areas of study such as business, education, human services, arts and sciences, engineering techology, optometry, pharmacy and health care. Students can work toward earning a 2-year associate's degree, 4-year bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctorate degree or professional certificate. Master's degrees are available in career and technical education, curriculum and instruction, criminal justice, information security, information intelligence, fine arts and nursing. Doctorate degrees are offered in pharmacy, optometry, and community college leadership.

Each college is organized around a specific field of study and offers inter-related programs designed to prepare students for successful careers within their field. In addition to the pursuit of academic excellence, FSU colleges strive to prepare students to become responsible citizens that will contribute to society and engender a desire for lifelong learning.
