Eureka, Illinois, a city in Woodford
County, holds the distinction of being the
college home of former President Ronald
Reagan. The city of slightly more than
5,000 holds an annual Reagan Festival to
celebrate the importance of the city in
the early life of the 40th president, and
visitors from around the world travel to
the small town to visit the Reagan museum
on the campus of Eureka College.

Located two hours from Chicago
and three hours from St. Louis, Eureka was
originally known as Walnut Grove when it
was founded, but the city’s name was
changed in 1855 because of a dispute with
another town. In addition to its
presidential notoriety, Eureka has an
award-winning high school marching band.
Eureka formerly called itself the “pumpkin
capital of the world,” but lost that title
when the Libby’s pumpkin processing plant
moved to a neighboring community in 1960.

Situated within the city is Eureka
, a four-year, private
liberal arts institution that offers more
than 30 majors and pre-professional
programs including business, education,
political science, communication, and
performing arts. The school was founded by
a group linked to the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) and maintains the
Church’s principles as a foundation for
student life. A majority of the more than
750 students are Illinois residents.

President Reagan graduated from Eureka
College in 1932 after earning degrees in
economics and sociology. Other notable
alumni include members of the U.S.
Congress, 7 governors, and 42 college and
university presidents. As Reagan
maintained a close relationship with his
alma mater, the school has done the same
by honoring the former president with
various on-campus events and societies and
a highly competitive scholars program that
offers full-tuition scholarships.
