Elmhurst has a population of more than 44,000. The city houses the headquarters of McMaster-Carr Supply Co. (a mechanical and industrial supply company) and Sunshine Biscuits (the maker of Cheez-It crackers), and is also the distribution headquarters for Famous Amos cookies. Residents have access to the Metra commuter rail, which provides service to downtown Chicago, and the PACE bus system. Elmhurst is within close proximity to both of Chicago’s major airports, O’Hare International and Midway International.

Despite its small size, Elmhurst is home to the Theatre Historical Society of America. This organization focuses on increasing awareness and appreciation of America’s theatres by documenting the social, cultural, and architectural history of theatres around the country.

Elmhurst College, a private, four-year liberal arts school that has been ranked as one of the Midwest’s best regional institutions is located on a 48-acre arboretum in Elmhurst. The college is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and promotes a liberal learning environment that revolves around professional preparation and self-formation. The small class sizes encourage discussion and exploration, and students have the opportunity to choose from more than 50 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate programs. Students can reach the dining, shopping, and nightlife scene of downtown Chicago in just 30 minutes via train.
