Educational Psychology Colleges and Programs

College Degree Finder

Educational psychology is the study of teaching and learning in schools and other educational settings. Educational psychologists conduct research to improve teaching, understand learning disabilities, and develop standardized tests and textbooks. Most educational psychologists specialize in learning in elementary and secondary school settings, but some specialize in adult learning.

Educational psychologists also focus on how learning is affected by cognitive, psychological, physical, and social factors. Behavioral, developmental, and cognitive psychology are integrated into this field.

Many educational psychologists practice after obtaining a master’s degree. Students enrolled in graduate-level educational psychology programs learn about human development and learning, research strategies, and cognitive psychology. Graduates are able to effectively conduct research, evaluate teaching methods, and effectively evaluate school performance. Educational psychologists with PhDs have better job opportunities.

Programs in educational psychology focus on the application of psychology to the study of the behavior of individuals in the roles of teacher and learner, the nature and effects of learning environments, and the psychological effects of methods, organization, resources, and non-school experience on the educational process. Programs typically include in depth instruction in human growth and development, research methods, learning theory, and psychological evaluation.
