School Overview
Eastern Michigan University, locally referred to as EMU, is a public, co-educational university in Ypsilanti, Michigan, just 8 miles east of Ann Arbor and about 30 miles west of Detroit. The university started out as Michigan State Normal School in 1849. Today it is one of the largest universities in the state of Michigan, is a member of the Mid-American Conference and is regionally accredited through the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. EMU is made up of 7 academic schools and colleges, which include the School of Arts & Sciences, Education, Business, Health & Human Service, and Technology, as well as a Graduate Studies School, and Honors College. The university is located on a large 800 acre campus that has over 120 buildings. As of 2013 the university had a total enrollment of roughly 23,000 students.
Academics
Eastern Michigan University offers bachelor’s, master’s, specialist’s and doctoral degree programs in a large variety career fields and disciplines. At the undergraduate level EMU offers more than 200 majors and minors. At the graduate level, students can choose from over 170 areas of study. The university is broken down into six academic divisions and has eight campuses. A select number of degrees and courses are offered online through the university’s virtual campus known as “EMU Online”.
Eastern Michigan University has 7 academic schools and colleges that are organized according to area of study. These include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Services and College of Technology. Two other academic divisions worth mentioning are the Honors College and the EMU Graduate School. EMU’s graduate school, located in the Starkweather building, has approximately 5,000 students enrolled in master’s and doctoral degree programs.
