School Overview
Founded in 1967, De Anza College is a two-year community college that resides in the city of Cupertino, California. It was named after Juan Bautista de Anza, the former Governor of New Mexico and a Novo-Spanish explorer from Spain. With a population of roughly 50,000, Cupertino is relatively small city that owes much its early growth to De Anza College, along with a few other entities, including Apple Computer. A large number of De Anza graduates go on to attend local four-year colleges and universities in the region, including California State University and University of California. In fact, a larger percentage of De Anza’s students consistently transfer to California State University and University of California than from any other community college in California.
Total annual enrollment at De Anza is roughly 22,000 and the college employs 300 full-time faculty and over 600 part-time faculty and staff. The college has a very diverse student body. Students attending De Anza College come from across the United States, as well as many foreign countries. The average class size at De Anza is about 30 students.
De Anza is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges to award associate degrees, certificates and diplimoas. De Anza offers programs in various fields of study and disciplines including cultural studies (African, Hispanic, African, Latine and Native American), visual arts (photography, sculpting, painting, etc.), performing arts (music, etc.), biology, business (accounting, administration, management, marketing, real estate, etc.), communications, computers (programming, computer science ans systems analysis), education, engineering (computer, electrical, mechanical and general), drafting, foreign language (French, German and Spanish), health sciences, psychology and social sciences, among others.
