Earning a degree in education will qualify you for a large variety of exciting career possibilities. One of the fastest growing segments of the education industry is the emerging field of corporate training. As markets become increasingly global, businesses must learn how to thrive in an international arena or face the very real possibility of going out of business. To survive in a global market space many corporations are recognizing the need for knowledgeable managers and employees who have the skills required to adapt to new cultures, customs, laws, procedures, and technologies. Corporate trainers employ advanced teaching models and adult education methods to help executives, managers and employees adapt, perform and excel in diverse markets, workplaces, and organizational settings.

Traditionally, corporate trainers have worked as independent consultants on behalf of several different organizations at the same time. However, the trend in recent years has been for corporations (especially larger corporations) to employ their own in-house corporate training specialists who function as part of the human resources team. These individuals sometimes carry the title of Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) or Chief Learning Officer (CLO). While most corporate trainers work for private companies, they are also employed by non-profits and government organizations. A few of the more common positions within the field of corporate training include Trainer Manager, Talent Development Specialist, Chief Learning Officer (CLO), Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO), Technical Trainer, Training Director, Organizational Development Consultant, and Customer Service Trainer.

Corporate trainers and corporate training specialists often work hand-in-hand with executives and human resource managers to develop curriculum, training materials, and development programs designed to meet the unique educational needs of the organization, usually with the end goal of greater worker retention and productivity.

Corporate Training Education

While there isn’t just one educational path to a career in corporate training, most corporate trainers and training specialists at minimum have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. The most successful corporate trainers generally have a master’s or Ph.D. degree in corporate training, or a closely related discipline. Coursework that willl help prepare you for a career in corporate training includes human resource development, educational technology, public relations, communications, adult education, assessment, business, training program management, public speaking, time management, leadership and professionalism.

In additional to a formal degree, there are several organizations, in the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD), that offer professional certification programs in employee training. ASTD offers the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) credential that ensures competency in the disciplines of training methodology and human resources protocol. This certification can be obtained by passing an extensive written exam.
