School Overview
Concordia University, located in Portland Oregon, is a private, coeducational Christian university that opened for business in 1905. Concordia started out as a University-preparatory school. However, in 1950 the school added college classes and then in 1977 the preparatory education was discontinued. The school has grown to over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The main university is in Northeast Portland but the school has branches all across Oregon and is currently in the process of opening a Law School in Idaho. The University is comprised of four colleges and offers students a selection of eighteen majors.
The University sits on a 13 acre campus located in Northeast Portland located near the U.S. Route 30 Bypass. The university has several other campus locations around Portland including Aloha, Ashland, Bend, Gresham and Medford. Concordia is known for its 75,000 square foot R. White Library & Learning Center. It is a $15 million library and is located across from the campus green on the school’s main campus. Other features of Concordia’s campus include the 60-foot bell tower and the spacious 50,000 square-foot Concordia Place Apartments. These apartments are the on-campus residence halls available to current students.
Concordia has four academic colleges with include the College of Education, the School of Management, the College of Theology, Arts and Sciences, and the College of Health and Human Services. Through these colleges, the university offers over 18 majors and 20 concentrations. Popular programs at Concordia include biology, history, education, nursing, English and more. In addition, Concordia offers graduate degrees in education and business administration.
Concordia received the rating of a Tier 4 school by U.S. News & World Report, in their “2010 Best Colleges” edition. They also ranked Concordia 88th best regional university in the west.
Their athletic teams, known as the Cavaliers, compete at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics level and are members of the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
