With 2.7 million residents, Chicago, Illinois is the third most populated city in the United States, just slightly smaller than Los Angeles, and about a third the size of New York City. Sometimes Chicago, with its surrounding cities, together is referred to as “Chicagoland.” Chicago is a major hub of industry, trade, commerce, telecommunications and infrastructure. It is also a popular spot for tourists, both domestic and international. In 2010 alone, the city hosted nearly 50 million foreign tourists and visitors. And while Chicago isn’t the biggest city, it has the 4th highest GDP of any city in the world. Next to New York City, Chicago is arguably one of the most important centers of domestic and international trade and commerce.

In addition to its importance as an economic powerhouse, Chicago is well known for its popular culture, night life, shopping centers, history and entertainment productions. Since the mid-1800’s, the city of Chicago has also been a center of higher education, academia and research. Today, Chicago is home to a large number of colleges and universities offering degree programs in just about every field imaginable. Many of the top university in the United States are located in Chicago. Institutions that are usually ranked among the top universities in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report, include Northwestern University, The University of Chicago, Loyola University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, and DePaul University. Other popular colleges and universities include Columbia College Chicago, Robert Morris University, Roosevelt University, and the School of Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

Chicago is also home to the nation’s first community college, Joliet Junior College – founded by William R. Harper in 1901. Harper, a former president of the University of Chicago, is considered the pioneer of the community college concept. Today, there are several public two-year community colleges in Chicago, which include Richard J. Daley College, Harry S Truman College, City Colleges of Chicago (seven in total), Kennedy-King College, Olive-Harvey College, Harold Washington College, Wilbur Wright College, Malcolm X College, and MacCormac College (a private college).

Within the city itself, there are several graduate schools, theological schools and semenaries. These include Adler School of Professional Psychology, the institute for Clinical Social Work, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, the University of Chicago Divinity School, the Moody Bible Institute, and the Catholic Theological Union.
