With a population of approximately 5,800, the city of Chadron is one of the smallest recognized municipalities in the state of Nebraska. Notwithstanding, it still has a Walmart (which the city shares with the nearby Pine Ridge Indian Reservation). Many people recognize Chadron as the location of the Buffalo, Oglala, and Fort Pierre National Grasslands, the headquarters of the U.S. Forest Service, and the home of Chadron State College, which was founded in 1911.
Chandron State College is a public, four-year college that has about 3,000 students. It has a relatively old campus, with a large number its original buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The college is the only four-year higher education in the western part of Nebraska that offers graduate degrees. It is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges an Schools. The school offers bachelor’s degree in over 50 fields of study and several pre-professional programs. It also offers various online and distance learning opportunities for students who are unable to frequent its campus.
