With just under 6,000 residents, the city of Carlinville, located in Mocoupin County, is one of the smallest cities in the state of Illinois. It is also located on the outskirts of the Greater St. Louis metro area (about 40 miles northeast of St. Louis).
Carlinville isn’t home to much but it is home to Prairie Farms Diary (one of the largest dairy processors in the Mid-west) and Blackburn College, a private four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
Blackburn College is the only four-year college or university in or around Carlinville, Illinois and is one of only a handfull of work college in the U.S. that are federally recognized. Of the work colleges in the United States, Blackburn is the only one to have student-managed work program, whereby enabling student not only to pay their way through college but to gain valuable leadership and management experience. All full-time, on-campus students are required to participate in the work program, however, commuter students are not.
