School Overview
In 1957, when civic-minded groups noticed a need for higher education in the Bronx, New York, they established The Bronx Community College of the City University of New York (BCC). Classes originally were held at Hunter College, but have been moved to the previous Bronx High School of Science in the University Heights neighborhood.
BCC has more than 30 academic programs and degrees that have helped students prepare for careers and to continue their education at four-year colleges in the state and throughout the country. The college provides around 11,500 students with associates and certificate programs, including criminal justice, automotive technology, digital arts, and nuclear medicine.
Several films have used the campus at BCC for their filming location. The 2001 film, A Beautiful Mind, originally planned on using MIT campus, but due to low budgets, the dome at BCC was featured instead. The dome also appeared in The Good Shepherd, a 2006 film directed by Robert De Niro. Burn After Reading, a 2008 film by the Coen brothers, used the Meister Hall at BCC as the Russian Embassy in their film.
Sports are a large part of student life and the academic community at BCC. BCC participates in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Their athletic team, the Broncos, also participates in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). Among men’s sports offered at BCC are track and field, cross country, soccer, baseball, and basketball. Women can participate in volleyball, basketball, cross country, and track and field.
