Boston is the largest city in Massachusetts. It is also the state’s capital. Boston is considered by many to not only be the capital of Massachusetts but also the unofficial “Capital of New England” due to the cultural and economic influence it has on the entire New England region. As of the last U.S.census, taken in 2010, Boston had a population of 617,594. However, there are over 4.5 million people living in the Greater Boston area, which includes the North and South Shores, as well as Merrimack Valley and MetroWest.

Boston is a city of several firsts. Boston was the site of the first subway system in the United States, America’s first public school and the Boston Latin School. Today Boston is a world-renowned center for higher education and is home to many colleges and universities. Boston’s reputation as an international center for higher education is due in large part to the education and research activities carried out at over 100 colleges and universities located throughout the Greater Boston area. There are more than 250,000 students attending college in Boston and Cambridge alone.

Boston University is the largest higher education institution in the Boston and is the city’s fourth-largest employer. The university is head quartered at its campus located along the Charles River on Commonwealth Avenue. Another large private univesrity is Northeastern University which is located in the Fenway-Kenmore area. Northeastern is well known for its Business, Health Science and Engineering schools. Located in Beacon Hill, Suffolk University is Boston’s third largest university and is best known for its prestigious business and law schools. Other schools in Boston include Boston College, a private Catholic Jesuit university, University of Massachusetts Boston, the city’s only public university, and the city’s two public community colleges, Bunker Hill Community College and Roxbury Community College.
