Booneville is one of Mississippi’s certified retirment cities. With a population just under 9,000, Booneville is also one of the smaller municipalities in the state. Notwithstanding, it is home to Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC), a two-year higher education institution with an annual enrollment of approximately 6,000 students. The college was established 1948 a junior college and was re-chartered as a community college in 1987. It serves the higher education and technical training needs of students and aspiring professionals in the counties of Prentiss, Tishomingo, Alcorn, Tippah, and Union.
NEMCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate of Arts degrees, Associate of Science degrees, Associate of Applied Science degrees, diplomas and professional certificates. The college offers programs in various academic and career-oriented fields of study and technical disciplines.
NEMCC is one of the few community colleges in Mississippi to offers several on-campus residence halls and dormitories for its students. These include Mississippi Hall, White Hall, Yarber Hall, Murphy Hall, and Wood Hall–each named in after the college’s previous leaders.
