School Overview
Alverno College is a private, four-year, women’s college located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin that is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. It was first established as St. Joseph’s Normal School in 1887 and was renamed Alverno Teachers College in 1936. It wasn’t until 1946 that it became Alverno College. Even though the college is primarily a women’s college, it does offer a few coeducational master’s degree programs. All bachelor’s degree programs are reserved for women only.
Alverno offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs designed for aspiring educators, teachers and working business professionals. Students can attend Alverno during the week or on weekends–depending on which is more convenient. The college’s weekend program was established in 1977 in an effort to provide accessible higher education for Milwaukee’s working women. Alverno offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Arts in Education.
Alverno uses a student-centric education approach that relies on high levels of interaction between students and faculty. It employs indepth performance evaluations and feedback designed to help students learn and grow. The ultimate goal of all programs at Alverno is to help students learn how to effectively comunicate (oral and written), solve problems, develop a global perspective, become contributing citizens and develop critical analysis skills.
