With only 5,237 year-round residents, Alfred is one of the smallest towns in the state of New York. Within the town Alfred is a village that, funny enough, is also named Alfred. Nothwithstandings its small size, Alfred is home to several higher education institutions: Alfred University, Alfred State College, and The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.

Founded in 1836, Alfred University is one of the oldest universities in the United States. It was first established as part of the Alfred Select teacher’s college. Today the university has roughly 2,000 full-time students (both graduate and undergraduate).

Alfred State College was established in 1908 as the New York State college of Agriculture at Alfred University. Alfred State College has a total annual enrollment of about 3,400 (undergraduate students) and offers programs in several subject areas including Nursing, Court Reporting, Information Technology, Surveying, and Web Design and Development.

The New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC) is a college within the State University of New york (SUNY) systems that is operated by Alfred University. NYSCC is made up of the School of Art and Design and the Inamori School of Engineering. The college awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
