Alcorn State University is a public university located in rural Clairborne County, which is northwest of Lorman, Mississippi. The school is the first historically black land-grant college established in the United States and is also the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. The school was founded in 1871 to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It is named after the former governor of Mississippi at that time, James L. Alcorn.
