School Overview
Adelphi University is a private nonsectarian university that is located in Garden City in Nassau County, New York. Adelphi University has been referred to as “Best Buy” by the Fiske Guide to Colleges for the previous 4 years is the oldest university on Long Island. Not only has the university been named a “Best College in the Northeastern Region” by The Princeton Review, but Adelphi University was awarded the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2010. U.S. News & World Report ranked Adelphi University #152 among all Tier 1 National Universities in the United States.
In 1996, Adelphi University faced a serious scandal, the same year it was celebrating its 100th anniversary. Peter Diamondopoulos, president of the University at the time, and the Board of Trustees were accused of misconduct and failure to carry out all the educational purposes of the university. Diamondopoulos and all Board of Trustees, with the exception of just one, were removed from their positions following a New York State Board of Regents investigation into the matter.
A new university president, Dr. Robert A. Scott, was appointed in 2000 and was instrumental in bringing the school back from the brink of financial disaster. He achieved this by decreasing tuition, increasing scholarships offered to students, and launching strategic advertising campaigns aimed at increasing enrollment. Thanks to Scott, the school surpassed it’s previous gains and was said to be going through a new renaissance.
The universitys athletic teams (the Adelphi Panthers) compete in he NCAA Division I Level for men’s soccer and women’s bowling, and NCAA Division II level for all other sports. Adelphi University, is also a member of the Northeast-10 Conference.
