An Accelerated BSN Degree, also known as an Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN, enables students to earn a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) in as little as 12 to 18 months (instead of the standard 4 years). On average and accelerated BSN degree program requires about 122 credits: 31 credits coming from a previous bachelor’s degree earned in a non-nursing field, 36 from prerequisite credits, and 55 credits from focused nursing curriculum (although these numbers may vary from school to school). The nursing curriculum is fast-paced and designed to build upon a students previous education while introducing them to the science and practice of nursing.
Over the last ten years the number of accelerated nursing degree programs has increased dramatically. There are now over 235 accelerated BSN programs in the United States. The growth in accelerated nursing degree programs exceeds that of all other entry level nursing programs that are offered a traditional 4 year nursing schools and colleges.
But don’t think that just because an accelerated BSN can be completed in a shorter time frame that it’s any easier than conventional 4 year program. In many cases, the opposite is true. Because of the faster pace most accelerated BSN programs are quite rigorous. Don’t expect to be able to work full-time and complete your accelerated BSN on the side. An accelerated BSN degree program is a full time commitment.
