Western Governors University | Online Degree Programs
At Western Governors University (WGU), your competence is the ultimate focus of every degree program offered. Western Governors University emphasizes mastery of critical skills and knowledge in your chosen career field, basing progress toward your online degree your ability to pass rigorous assessments (projects, test, assignments, etc.) instead of simply accumulating credit hours (as it the policy at many other online universities.) At Western Governors University competency-based learning is the only way to learn.
With undergraduate and graduate degree programs in business, education, information technology, and various health professions, Western Governors University's rigorous, yet flexible approach to learning provided the university a unique advantage over other online degree programs. Here's what WGU has to offer you:
- Flexibility and Affordability. WGU's competency-based approach to teaching and learning allows for a highly personalized degree program. In most cases, students can access course materials or study independently at the time and place of their choosing. Students entering a program with years of relevant experience, may be eligible to complete assessments even faster. This could quite possibly save you thousands, since tuition is paid at a flat rate every six months, regardless of how many assessments you complete during that time.
- Credibility through Accreditation. WGU is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) and regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Additionally, WGU's Teachers College is the first and only exclusively online teacher education institution to receive accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)--quite an accomplishment. Its also worth mentioning that Western Governors University is also the recipient of two International Distance Learning Awards from the U.S. Distance Learning Association, including the 21st Century Best Practices in Distance Learning Award.
- Commitment and Support. As Western Governors University student, you'll be provided ongoing support from a competent and dedicated mentor who will help motivate you as you progress toward completing your degree. You'll have the opportunity do get to know your mentor as an advisor, coach, and even a friend. You'll also have the opportunity to interact with an online learning community of students in your same program.
Accreditation
WGU is the only university in the United States to have simultaneously received accreditation by four regional accrediting commissions. Currently, Western Governors University's "home" accrediting commission is the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the same organization that accredits such leading higher education institutions including the University of Washington, University of Oregon, Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and other private and public colleges. Western Governors University is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). As mentioned previously, the Western Governors University Teachers College is the only exclusively online university to receive NCATE accreditation for its degree programs that lead to teacher licensure from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
