Houston, Texas Colleges and Universities

Who would have thought that the 4th largest city in the united states is located in Texas? Well it is. With slightly over 2 million residents, Houston is not only the largest city in Texas, but one of the largest in the entire United States. Houston was named after General Sam Houston, who was the former President of the Republic of Texas back in the late 1830s. Houston owes much of its previous success and growth to the railroad industry and discovery of oil in 1901. Today Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest concentration of healthcare and research centers in the world. Houston is also home to NASA's John Space Center and the "Mission Control Center".

Houston's economy today is largely based the manufacturing, transportation and aeronautics industries. Other industries that contribute to Houston's strong and every vibrant economy include health care and equipment manufacturing for the oil industry. Houston is a very ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse community. And for those looking for a higher education, Houston can offer some of the best schools, college or universities found anywhere in the United States.

In addition to an excellent selection of colleges and universities, Houston offers some of the most competitive tuition rates in nation, especially for in-state residents. Houston colleges are as diverse as the city itself. They vary in size, curricula, athletic programs, cultural background, mission, extracurricular activities and degrees offered. While some colleges are geared toward specific career training programs others offer a broader liberal arts education. Both the public and private 4-year colleges in Houston offer students the opportunity to earn a bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree, at very affordable price. And if you're more interested in a professional certificate or diploma to qualify for a promotion at a current job, the large Houston community college system may offer the right fit for you.
